Yes. TikTok shows the author of a story how many views it has and which accounts watched it: they swipe up on their story to see the list. A private account or turned-off profile view history does not keep you out of it. Watching without a TikTok account, for example on tik.observer, never puts you in the list.
How to see who viewed your TikTok story
A TikTok story is a photo or video that stays visible for 24 hours. While it is up, TikTok shows you the total number of views and the accounts that watched it:
- In the TikTok app, tap your profile photo at the top of your Following feed, inbox or profile.
- Go to the story you want to check. The number of views is at the bottom.
- Swipe up to see the accounts that viewed it.
TikTok describes these steps in its Help Center article TikTok Stories.
Can someone see that you viewed their story if your account is private?
Yes. Your own privacy settings don't hide you from someone else's story viewers. TikTok says it directly in Watching Stories on TikTok: people can see you viewed their story even if your account is private or your profile view history is turned off.
| How you watch the story | Do you show up in the viewer list? |
|---|---|
| Signed in to TikTok, public account | Yes |
| Signed in to TikTok, private account | Yes |
| Signed in, profile view history turned off | Yes |
| Without a TikTok account, on tik.observer | No |
The list is made of TikTok accounts. If no TikTok account is involved when you watch, there is nobody to add to it.
Are story views the same as profile view history?
No. They are two separate things, and they follow different rules.
| Story viewers | Profile view history | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is listed | Every account that watched the story | Only accounts that have the setting turned on |
| Other conditions | None named by TikTok | Both 16 or older, the profile has fewer than 5,000 followers |
| What it covers | Views of one story | Visits to the profile in the past 30 days |
So you can stay out of someone's profile view history and still show up under their story. The rules for profiles are in our guide Can someone see you viewed their TikTok profile?
Videos, stories, reposts and followers of any public account. Nothing is linked to you.
How to watch a TikTok story without being seen
tik.observer is a free anonymous TikTok viewer. It shows public stories in your browser without a TikTok account, so you never appear in the list of people who viewed them:
- Open the TikTok Story Viewer.
- Type the username, with or without the @, and press View.
- The Stories tab opens with the account's active stories. Tap one to play it with sound.
Each story shows how long it has left of its 24 hours. Stories the author saved to Highlights stay on the profile longer and appear as round covers at the top of the tab.
What you can't watch this way
- Stories of private accounts. They are for approved followers only, and tik.observer shows public content only.
- Stories older than 24 hours. After that a story is gone, unless the author put it in a Highlight.
- Deleted stories. An author can remove a story before the 24 hours are up.
Questions
Can someone see that I viewed their TikTok story?
Yes, if you watched it while signed in to TikTok. The author sees every account that viewed the story.
Does a private account hide my story views?
No. TikTok says people can see you viewed their story even if your account is private.
Does turning off profile view history hide my story views?
No. Profile view history is a separate setting. It does not affect the story viewer list.
How long does a TikTok story last?
24 hours from the moment it is posted. After that it disappears, unless the author saves it to a Highlight.
Can I watch a TikTok story anonymously?
Yes. Watch it without a TikTok account, for example on tik.observer, and you are not added to the viewer list.
